James Walker

My coaching and consulting practice has a psychodynamic orientation. I trained in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in the USA and Australia, as a member of the Freudian School of Melbourne and completing the Australian Centre for Psychoanalysis four-year program, while working as Clinical Psychology Registrar at the Austin Hospital. I studied child psychoanalysis at Monash University and was invited to join the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and the Clinical Issues program of the Victorian Government Health Department. I was a co-recipient of the university's award for research and teaching with the National Institutes of Mental Health.

After teaching in Melbourne, I taught at the University of Southern California (medical campus), later at the American University Graduate School of Business (MBA program), and the Georgetown University Washington D.C. At the same time I practiced as an organisational consultant and coach which I continued on return to Australia together with clinical hospital and private psychotherapy practice, and served on the coaching panel of The Australia Institute of Company Directors.

My consulting is psychodynamic based and has been focussed on resolving impasses for organisations – committees, Boards and executives. Clients have included the World Bank, IMF, state and federal governments and major commercial organisations. Please contact me for detailed information about my work with teams to resolve impasse.

I have presented many papers and conducted numerous workshops on coaching methods, organisational dynamics and psychoanalytic topics in Australia and overseas.
